FISHING REPORTS

DISTRICT ANGLING WEATHER CONDITIONS REDUCE SIZE OF CATCHES IN SOME AREAS FISH IN GOOD CONDITION The fortnightly fishing reports for the Rotorua and Taupo districts supplied to the Conservator of Fish and Game (Mr. A. Kean) , state, that weather conditions to some extent limited bags during the period, but that in spite of this, some good catches had been taken. The condition of the fish generally was reported to be more satisfactory. The fish taken from the various rivers in the Whakatane-Opotiki district are reported as in good to very good condition. The heaviest fish taken from the district for some time fell to the rod of Mr. J. Adams. This fish, which weighed 141bs 9|ozs, was caught on the fiy in the Whakatane River on one fine evening. Some good results had been obtained on Lake Rerewhakaitu during the period notably that of 45 fish in good condition taken during a weekend by three Rotorua anglers. The weight and condition of the Rotoiti fish were still holding good and conditions were further improved by the run of fish that was now tak'ng place in the Ohau Channel. Mr. Turner from England, secured eight fish on the fiy in one day's fishing on Rotoiti, the bag averaging 61bs. For six days' fishing he also secured 55 fish, averaging 51bs with the heaviest scaling 7|lbs. Major Oliver who is resident near Lake Rotoehu reported well of his regular fishing excursions on the lake. One day recently he took six fish averaging 2|lbs with the heaviest 51bs, on the fiy in good condition. The fish in Lake Rotorua were reported to be in good condition. Captain Wilson recently caught three, averaging 31bs, with the heaviest 31 lbs. Windy weather had curtailed the activities of anglers for most of the period on Lake Rotorua. Taupo Fishing A strong easterly wind had been blowing for the last four days of the period otherwise weather conditions in the district were favourable, and some very nice catches of fish in good condition were taken. Several limit catches were caught from launches and by anglers who fished from rocks. At the Tongariro, fishing was still very hard, it being yet too early for this river. A heavy flood would alter the conditions. At present there were a great number of fish round the mouth which was fishing well. The Delta was fishing very well and 6 limits had been taken here in the past few days. Trolling parties had met with a lot of success in this locality. The Tauranga-Taupo had been fishing fairly well and was not overfished. Two anglers took 15 fish one day last week, at the outlet and several other nice bags were taken here. At Motutere and Jellicoe Points several anglers in camp had met with very fair success. Fiy fishing and harling from a boat in this vicinity had been very good lately. Two anglers who had been camped at Hatepe for the past month, were very satisfied "^ith their catches. Besides the fish" they had smoked and given away, the balance had been returned to the lake alive. Harling off the mouth had been good, and several limits were taken here by the Maoris. Waitahanui outlet was fishing well when the weather permitted. Cne angler took seven fish which weighed 501bs, in one evening. The heaviest fish was 9|lbs. Two rods took 12 fish during the day including one 101b fish taken in the river. Two, three and four-mile bays were fishing well. One local angler had taken six nice fish before breakfast, three weighing 61bs each. At the Pines, three fishermen had each taken their limits. Dry fiy fishing had improved lately. One angler had taken 11 fish two other catches being of five each in the Huka stretch which had not been fished much since the fire of a few weeks ago. The launches had recorded some very good catches. One launch took 54 fish (three limits) and another launch of two rods took two limits Other launches did well when the weather was favourable.. The outlet had been fishing faivly well and some very good conditioned fish were taken here. Rowboats at the outlet and in the bay in the evenings and early morning were all doing well. Details of recent catches were: — The good total of 190 fish averaging 51bs, heaviest lOlbs, .fell to the rod of Mr. Nitchke, who fiy fished at "Wanganui where. he was camped for

14 days. His fishing was done principally at night. Forty-eight was the total number of fish averaging 4 l-101bs taken by Duncan Bros. (2) also camped at Wanganui for 10 days. Their fishing, however, was done in the cay time. Three limit catches were recorded on one occasion in the Launch Tainui by the Hon. Zwar's party of four rods. Actually 54 fish, averaging 4|lbs were taken -by the four roJs, harling or fiy fishing frdm the shore at Mine Point at Whakaipo Bay. The same party (less one. rod) on another excursion obtained 37 fish in the same locality. In the Tamiti, Mr. and Mrs. Levin took 27 fish average 51bs, heaviest 71bs, fiy fishing at Whakapo Bay on one day. Mr. H. The Launch Tamiti operating at Whakaipo Bay, registered two limit catches to Messrs. Padbury and Shear. Two 101b fish were recorded during the period, one to Mr. Nitchke and the other to Mr. Harbut. Tokaanua Area. — At the time the report was submitted rain was very badly required throughout the district to provide anything like. gcod fishing. All rivers and streams were particularly low and still continued to fall, affording practically no water to give the fish a decent run. The ony water affording good fish was the mouths of all streams, where large quantities of fish were congregated for a decent run. Anglers were not finding it very difficult to obtain limit bags at the mouths of the Tongariro where some really good fish were being caught. One angler during the week had landed a very nice lOllbs fish in the vicinity of the Admirrl's Pool. Several anglers are taking three to five fish per day from the Tongariro River and the fish taken are in really good condition. Seven limits have been taken at the mouths of the Tongariro and fish up to eight and 91bs were being taken frequently. The most successful anglers at the mouths were Messrs. Cramer-Roberts, B. U. Barlow, Yatman, Lambe and E. White.man. Quite a few good fish are now being taken from the Tauranga-Taupo which was improving rapidly. Trolling parties were still returning with really good catches, but the fish taken did not appear in as good condition as those taken on the fiy, neve.rtheless, they were quite good. The following catches of fish reported in good (a few mentioned as fair) were taken on the fiy. They averaged 51bs in weight and several 91, 9, 8 and 71b . fish were included in the bags. Messrs. E.
