CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Forty hours work for 37/6 a.week are the conditions under which 20 unemployed married men of Christchurch were offered work. by the Uncmployment Board in cleaning out the Kaituna River for the Wairewa County Council. Eighteen oi, the riien accepted the conditions and Teft the city this morning by train. The amount of 37/6 per week is the same basis as these men had previously been given for working three days weekly under the No. 5 Scheme. From this there will be dedueted the cost of food, but they will have free living quarters, providing only their own blankets, and cooking their- own food. They will however, have the advantage of being in woi'k eontinuously, and not for three weeks in every four. Trade Union officials spoke to the men before leaving, endeavouring to dissuade them from accepting work on these conditions, hut only two men chose to accept their adviee. Accoi'ding to one of the officials, the men said that they were in such extreme poverty that they were f orced to accept the conditions of work offered to them. A party of police was on the station in case of a disturbanee,' hut no action on their' part was necessary.
