HAIR-SPLITTING

COUNTY COUMCIL AND PUBLIC WORKS DEPT. "This is splitting hairs all right," commented a member of the Rotorua County Couneil at yesterday s Co .ncil meeting, when a letter was received from the Public Works Departm ' it stating that as the length of Whai a-tane-Rotorua highway, on which the Couneil was making contribution, b-id been re-measured and found to be 10 ehains longer than at first estimated a further contribution of 27s 6d wo ld be required from the Couneil to co :ar the extra distance. The Department also advised tl-at, following the proclamation of ihe Wairoa and Waimangu Roads as secondary highways, the Council's c mtribution of £18 per annum in respect of the Waimangu Road, and £-0 annum in respect to the Wairoa Rc'd should be made rigularly to the Departmcnt in quarterly instalments. Thc first payments in regard to both ro .L were now due. The clerk pointed out that the Cc cil had already cxpended £50 or Af over and above its contribution of 18 on the Waimangu Road. The exp >n diture on the Wairoa Road had a.so exceeded the amount of the contrDution. In view of this position, vY Couneil decided to make represen.ations to the Department asking that the amount of its contribution be iY 'e gone this year, as it had already x. pended a considerably larger amo ant than was required by the Dep rtment.
