REFUSED PRIZE
CONSCIENTIOUS SCRUPLES OF CHURCH LAY READER SYDNEY, Saturday. The conscientious scruples of Mr. C. Smith, a Kogarah civil servant, have led him to .refuse £20 won in a State Lottery, in which he had half share of a ticket which won £,40. Mr. Smith, who is ,a Church of England lay reader at Rooty Hill, in association with Mr. Harold Rawson wbn a game at a social evening at Booty Hill. The prize was a State Lottery ticket. Mr. Smith refused to take the ticket, as he is strongly opposed to lotteries and all forms of gambling. He handed the ticket back to the persons who had organised the game, and later it won £40 at the drawing. Of this £20 went to Mr. Dawson. On a recent Sunday Mr. Smith annou'nced that he would refu'se to touch his share of the prize. Being ppposed to lotteries, he did not regard the money as his: The gentleman to whom he had returned the ticket could do what he liked with the money.
