HEAVY GALE
VESSELS IN LYTTELTON HARBOUR SEVERELY BUFFETED . TANKER PUTS TO SEA CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A heavy gale in tbe harbour, stated t& be the worst experiepced for years, caused damage at Lyttelton to-'day. All the vessels in port were knpclced about, and the large tanker Vqco, loaded with motor spirit, was compelle'd to put to sea. The vessels in tbe inner harbour laboured beayily at their moorings. As tbe Voco began to get out of control she bumped heavily against the sbarp tops of tbe mboring piles whicb were broken oif, and tbe large, piles on shore were sbaken from their concrete bedding. The, whole wharf was pushed 18 incbes out of plumb. . A tug was moved from tbe wharf and. taken out .into the stream, and •laller as .a hig sea was, running in the harbour the , Voco put out to sea- . The Unipn, Company's cargo steam'er Kartigl was ,severely bumped for some /hours,, and finally put out in^o the stream. , .The vessel was found to he leaking, and will be docked tp-morrow morning. ' i , 'Smaller vessels had a trying time and .launches broke from their nioorings!. The concrete bpat slip at, Dia-r mond Harbour >vas washed awayr and a number of dinghies were carried put to sea.
