Following re.cent. representations made by launch owners on Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti, officers of the Public Worlcs Department.,a^e considering various projects for raising the le.yel . of . the lakes and clearing the sand drift. which -at present maices the negotiation of the Ohau channel outlet from Lake Rotorua a matter of considerable difficulty. In this connection, it.is interesting tp nqte.that the annual variation in the level of Lqke Rotoiti has ranged from .52 feet in 1922 to 1.60 feet in 1926. The greatest recorded variation • in. the ■level .of . this lake has.. been 2.14 feet and the highest and lowest level variation recorded, 3.82 feet in 1925, and 1.68 feet in 1915. No accurate reqords of Lake Rotorua's levels are extant, but at the present time the iqvel of Rotorua is 1.62 feet above fhut of Rotoiti. So far as observations can determine, the level of Rotorua is largely . controlled by the volume of water in Rotoiti. Main Highway Improvements Extensive improvement work Is in hand on the Auckland main highway, between Tirau and the Okoroire turnoff at the foot of the Mamaku. Most of the awkward corners are being either eliminated or greatly improved and several, qhort .deviations have resulted in considerable improvements to the grades. Except between Tirau and Cambridge and on the Razorbacks, where it is bad, the road surface is excellent the'whole way to Auckland.
