CAPTAINS' CONDUCT
ORDERED TO PAY COSTS OF MARINE COURT INQUIRIES "STATEMENTS UNRELIABLE" CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Judgements given to-day in the Breeze and Storm inquiries find that the mishaps of both of these costal steamers were eontributed to by errors on the part of the captains. Both captains were ordered to pay the eost of the inquiries. Captain Sheppard, of the Storm, has to pay costs totalling £18 15/-, and Captain McArthur, of the Breeze £56 10/-. In respect to the Breeze, the Court stated that the master's statements in regard to several matters were unreliable, and the explanations of the mate, Charles Alfred Williams, in regard to alterations in the log hook, were weak and unconvincing. In regard to the Storm, the Court expressed the opinion that the second mate, William Robert Williams, had endeavoured unduly to affect the reputation of the master. The Court issued the following general statement: "Several of the ship's records in cases that have come before us have been kept in an unsatisfactory manner. Mariners, in the public interest and in their own, should excercise great care in properly and accurately making the necessary entries."
