LOCAL AND GENERAL

Mr. E. Humphries and Mrs. Hollis were the other finalists. The winning couple will receive a prize valued at two guineas. Appearance of Mushrooms Following the warm rains of the past week or so, mushrooms are making- an appearance in the fields and paddocks in and around Rotorua. Although the quality is not exceptionally good, some fine speeimer.s have been obtained. Small miuhrooms were selling in Rotorua shops on Saturday for sixpence a pound. Objection to Art Union Petitions, which have been signed by members of the chief Protestant ehurches in Rotorua and Te Kuiti, are being forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs objecting to a proposed Art Union to be conducted by the South Auckland Federated Aero Clubs, for. the general purposes of the Aero .Clubs in Rotorua, Hamilton, Taumarunui and Te Kuiti. The objection is based on the grounds that this method of raising money is morally wrong and economically unsound, and therefore against the best interests of the Dominion and the various districts coneerned. Cold Weather Yesterday There were signs yesterday which seemed to indicate that winter will set in early this year. The cold wind was most unusual for February, while a number of autumn leaves have already drifted into the doorways and gardens. Slip On Taupo Road A large landslide on the NapierTaupo Road in the vicinity of Tarawera delayed service cars for about three hours yesterday. A good deal of hard work had to he done before a passage could be elfected. Prisoners Escape The Rotorua police have received information that there was an escape of two prisoners from the Hautu Camp (near Tongariro) on Saturday evening. Particulars are meagre, but it is known that the men are Augustine William Sullivan and William Edgar Allen. Rain On Saturday Heavy rain, accompanied by vivid sheet lightning and distant thunder, fell in Rotorua on Saturday evening. District reports show that recent rains have immensely benefitted pastures, and a good autumn growth is assured. Good Conditioned Fish The closing months of the fishing season are generally acknowledged to be the best both from the point of view of results and from the quality of the fish. Fly fishing is now improving every week, and anglers are taking increasingly satisfactory bags. The Ohau Channel run should commence shortly, 'and when the fish enter the channel waters, some excellent fly fishing should be obtained. Feed is very plentiful in all district lakes and this is reflected particularly in the condition of catches taken from Rotorua and Rotoiti. Two local anglers on Saturday took 22 fish from the channel inlet and the bay adjacent to Cochrane Park, and every fish taken was in the pink of condition. Several of the young hen-fish were so well fed that they had the carp shape rather than the slenderer lines of the trout. Kauri Gum. The kauri gum industry at Thames, despite the comparatively low prices offering, is one of the few industries in the district which is keeping on a steady basis (says an exehange). There are many men out in the baclc country behind the headwaters of the Kauaeranga, and these are said to be securing fair quantities of gum.
