BIG MINES CLOSING

EXTENSIVE DISMISSALS Rec. Feb. 19, 7.10 p.m. CAPETOWN, Thursday. The directorate of the de Beers' diamond mines has decided to close the mines for an ipdefinite period, pending an improvement in the world's diamond market. The decision will become effective on March 31. The closing down will affect 1,500 white workers and many thousands of natives, apd will mean the probable curtailment of expenditure in the Union, of wages amounting to £222,500. A number of white workers will be retained on part time. Those dismissed will receiye Iiberal cash payments.
