FREE TREES OFFERED
STATE FORESTRY PREPARED TO SUPPLY SAPLINGS FOR PLANTING
ARE AREAS AVAILABLE, • At a meeting of the Rotorua Borough Council last'night a letter was received from the Commissioner of Unemployment, advising that the State Forest Service would have a considerahle surplus of tree stocks avaflahle after the winter plar.ting programme of the department had been provided for, and stating that supplies from the State Forest Sex'vice would be made available to local bodies as the Unemployment Board directed. The trees were offered on ' payment of lifting, packjng and f reight eharges only. The b jard was desirous that where possible local bodies having suitable areas should avail themselves of this offer and _ox> ganise a programme for the utiiisation of unemployed labour in preparing the ground and planting trees. Proposals for this purpose should he submitted early to the board, stating the numher of trees required. The offer was referred to the 1 Pai'ks Committee *with power -to act, and to ascertain if there are any suitable areas available. • Cr. E. T. Johnson, when the matter was discussed, douhted if there were any areas suitable. The Mayor (Mr. T. Jackson) said it was definitely an afforestation proposal, and unless the areas were available it could not be accepted.
