MEETING CONCLUDES
POSTFGNED SECOND DAY'S PROGRAMME COMPLETED TOTE RECEIPTS DROP SPEEDMINT WINS PRESIDENT'S AND TEA CHAT, BOROUGH HANDICAP The Kotorua Racing Club's annual meeting was concluded yesterday in showery weather. Early in the day, the weather was fair though cloudy, but intermittent showers fell from the third race onward until the close of the day, when the evening was again fine. The attendance was fair, though necessarily interfered with as the result of Saturday's postponement and the consequent alteration in plans of local residents. Some fine racing was witnessed, but scratchings were again numerous and the fields were small. As expected, the totalisator returns showed a heavy decline upon last year. The figures for the day were £7,095, as against £13,142 for the corresponding day at the previous meeting. This gives a total of £17,721 10s, in comparison with £29,041 10s last year, a decrease of £11,680. ' 0
There was a full field to face the starter in the opening race of the day, the Tarawera Highweight handicap. Pateena started favourite and gave her supporters a really good run for their nioney. She led the field the whole way until the turn into the straight, when Welcome Boy made his run followed hy Great Emblem and Good Idea, leaving the filly in fourth place. Flying Stakes Silene went out first favourite for the Flying Stakes carrying £150 from Last Lap with £135. The mare got well away and made the running for the greater part of the distance, "but Last Lap was always handy and made his run successfully on approaching the straight. The Ohinemutu Hack Cup saw Knight of Australia start favourite With Lady Lulu and Teels next in order. Holly Holm, Good Idea, Pateena, Excella Tea and Mia Stella did not face the starter. Heavy rain fell just before the start, but the shower lifted as the race was started on time. Teels made the running through the greater part of the race and finished well. Knight of Australia's showing was not as good as expected. President's Handicap Speedmint, who went out favourite in the President's Handicap, ran one of the best races of the day and secured her victory over Paganelli by a remarkably fine run up the straight. She had to make up a lot of ground, too, having a poor place in the opening stages of the race. The unexpected happened in the Rennie Stakes, when Master Brierly scored over Tin Lap and Welcome Lu. These two horses who had been racing in close company throughout, with Master Brierly lying third, left an opening at the entrance to the straight and the gelding shot through r^id won easily. Electric Handicap Transaction was the only scratching in the Electric Handicap. The rest faced the barrier with Searcher carrying £220 and Valpia £195. Mononatui was next favoured with £162. Arch Eagle did not show up prominently until the closing stages of the race when he got through and put in a fine run up the straight to win by a head from Silene. The public showed a marked preference for Tea Chat in the Borough Handicap and entrusted him with £658, the largest amount placed upon any horse during the day. Tradesman, the second favourite, carried only £163. Tea Chat practically had command of the race all the way. Although Homelight made a bold bid to capture the Farewell Handicap in a small field of three, Flying Prince proved himself possessed of too much speed at the end of the distance and won a good race with going to spare.
