GOVERNMENT ECONOMIES To the Editor. Sir, — It would he a reflection on the honour of New -Zealand to imagine that the great majority of her people are not ashamed at the circumstances surrounding the dismissal by the Government of nine charwomen from their employment in Christchurch. As a measure of economy, the action is nothing short of idiotic, for with their means of earning a living closed, it is certain that the nine women and their dependants will cost the country far more than £364 in charitable aid. Our worthy Government is greatly concerned about preserving the morale of the workers, when it is a matter of sustenance payments to the unemployed. How then is the morale of these poor women faring when they are denied the right to earn their living and have to depend on charity? Furthermore, does it not seem a poor reward to returned soldiers to place them in the position of obtaining employment at the expense of widows, deserted women and children? These are a few of the questions that are agitating the minds of the people at present and maybe the Hon. Hamilton will raise a blush when he realises that the details of the latest economy stunt are broadcast throughout the world. — I am etc,.. MUGGINS. Rotorua, February 14.
