DEATH OF LEADER
ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT LONDON, Monday. Mr. Reynolds and Detective McGeehan were witnesses at an inquest held on Saturday concerning the deai;h of th'e Republican leader James Vaugh, who was alleged to have died as the result of ill-treatment by the Civic Guard 'while" detained at Ballinmore barracks. Vaugb's father heard a guard telling a companion that he was assaulted. Detective McGeehan denied the whole charge. He said the guards treated Vaugh most kindly. After his discharge Vaugh accepted drinks from the detective, who was said to have ■ assaulted him. Mr. Reynolds, in his e'vidence, said he heard Vaugh thanking the guards for their treatment. He said he had not noticed marks of injury. Vaugh was arrested on December 5 and was charged on December 8. He did not appear before the military tribunal. The doctor's evidence said that Vaugh died from influenza and congestion of the lungs. The jury returned the verdict of death due to natural causes.
