ROTORUA RIDERS

RACING REVIEWS FORM AT WELLINGTON GOOD INDICATION OF PROSPECTS DUNEDIN TO-MORROW

Specially written for the "Post" by

The arnraal race meeting of the Rotorua Racing Club opens to-mor-row and will be concluded on Monday. The complete review of the fields for the opening day will appear to-morrow. The heavy-weight horseman, R. S. Bagby, is to ride Gold Day in the Tourist Handieap to-morrow. It is probable that he will also be on Knight of "Australia in . the hack event. This horse galloped brilliantly at Takanini on Tuesday morning and should be hard to heat in his engagements at Rotorua. The faet that L. Dulieu has been engaged to ride Pateena at Rotorua suggests that this filly will take on the High-weight instead of the haek mile to-morrow. Dulieu was riding at New Plymouth yesterday and will come on to Rotorua to-day. Pateena, on her two good showings at Takapuna is a likely winner this week-end. There seems to be a doubt about Tea Chat fulfilling his engagement in the sprint event at Rotorua tomorrow. Arrangements have been completed for the transport of others of the Jamieson sti'ing for' the meeting this week-end, but" no mention has been made of Tea Chat. The stable is represented in the sprint hy Chief Jewel, although this horse also elaims an engagement in the Cup. However, Chief Jewel is a good sprint er and this will probably be his mission. Good Prospects The outstanding hack seen out at the recent Wellington meeting was undoubtedly Retraet, who the first day ran seeond, and then eaptured two events among the haeks, registering high class perf ormances. A f eature of Retract's running was that on each occasion he met with serious interference, but was so good that he overcame all diffieulties. Retraet is due to make his next appearance at the Marlborough meeting to-day and to-morrow, and he should again do well. He is a fine handieap horse in the making. Landmark shaped fairly well among the good haek classes at Trentham last month and an early improvement can be expected from him. He figures in the minor races at the Marlborough fixture, and can be. ticlced off to pick up a race or two at the meeting. Kalmuk is a long time getting out of the non-winners' class, The first day at Pahiatua he ran his best race to date, being in front all the way to within the last stride of the winning post, when he was caught by two others and be was third, beaten 1 two half heads. Kalmuk has a chance to get out of the maiden divisioh in the Novice Stakes at the Marlborough fixture to-day. Promising The Australian bred Solitaire II. ran solid races at Wellington, and his next appearance should see him getting nearer the stakes. He is engaged in the hack sprint at the Marlborough meeting to-day and he ought to give a good account of himself. The oppositjon is only fair, so Solitaire II. is placed right to score his second win since landing in this country. Another hack that shaped in promising fashion at Wellington was Gold Sand, and she backed up this opinion by winning very nicely indeed at Pahiatua subsequently. It may be Gold Sand that will provide most opposition to the strong Corry bracket in the Blenheim Handieap to-day at the Marlborough fixture. This bracket at present eomprises three horses owned by Mr. J. Corry: Kozan, Imateagirl and Landmark. One of the most interesting races on the Dunedin second day card tomorrow is the James Hazlett Gold Cup, a weight-for-age event run over seven furlongs. Nightmarch is to make his reappearance in this contest, and Riccarton advices point to the faet that he will run rather better than anticipated. Gay Crest is the logical favourite, however, although the -distance may be a bit short for him. The field will dwindle down eonsiderably by starting time, and the issue will be expected to rest between Gay Crest, Cricket Bat and Nightmarch.
