BOWLING SECTION PLAY CONCLUDES

FINAL TO-DAY WHITTLE, CHIPLIN,- ROBERTSON AND WALKER IN SEMIFINALS YESTERDAY'S PLAY Following the conclusion of section play yesterday, the Rotorua Bowling Club's annual tournament will conclude to-day when the semifinals and final will be decided. Whittle • (Grey Lynn) will meet Chiplin (Rawhiti) on one semi-final this morning, and Robertson (Onehunga) will meet the Dominion champion, Maxwell Walker (Auckland) in the second semi-final. It is expected that these games will be fmalised . during the morning and that the final will be decided in the afternoon. Rotorua interest eentred round the local club's last hope when Pakes' team met the Carlton four skipped by Gladding in a tie for the Section C semi-final. The visitors started well at the commencement oi the match, and gained a good lead but later stagnation set in and Rotorua won four heads in succession to practically even the score. The Cai'lton team came to light again, however, and by the eighteenth head, had a lead of 24 to 11. This left a difficult obstacle for Pakes to overcome and though he managed to take the final three heads he only added six to his score. This left the other tie in the section, Neilson and Robertson to play off.

Section Finals In Section A the game which attraeted most interest was that between Higgott (Carlton) and Whittle (Grey Lynn). The latter team won by the decided margin of 20 to 11. This left the victors winners df the section. The B Section tie match produced an interesting game when Chiplin (Rawhiti) after a keenly and evenly contested match, defeated Russell (Remuera) by 24 to 18. The first half of the match was level pegging, both teams playing well. It was not until the last few heads that Chiplin gained any appreciable lead. The most spectacular match of the day, was the C section tie between Robertson (Onehunga) and Neilson (Karori) which drew the attention of the best part of the gallery. In the early stages, neither team had a lead of more than one or two,- but by the eighteenth head Robertson had gained a lead of 21 to 15. Both teams played sterling games making few mistakes, and the work of the two skips was a fine demonstration of the technique of bowling. Robertson added another one to his score on the nineteenth head, but on the next, a long one, his opponents were lying six up and fairly safe. With a spectacular draw, however, Robertson carried kitty away to have the shot. Neilson retaliated with his last bowl, however, neatly removing the shot to hold the position himself . The last two heads added one to the score of each team, leaving Robertson the winner by 23 to 16. There were no ties in the D section, Maxwell Walker (Auckland) being easily the winner with nine wins and only one loss. The wind which made play difticult earlier in the week, died down yesterday and /conditions for play were consequently improved.
