Annual Sports Meeting ' A" general' meetings ;of the Rotorua Athletic and Axemen's Club will - he held' in the Citizeri's Club'.,at eight o'clpck to-night, when preliminary arrangements will be discussed for the club'S; forthcoming annual sports meeting. , Definite dates ,haye still to be deqided,- but the. meeting will probably be held either at. Easter or early ih Jqnq. 5. j ' . ' • Rotorua Relief Work There are at present about 97 men on relief work in Rotorua, 30 of them being single, 45 being three-day men, and 22 four-day men. The, chief work in hand is the formation of Philip Street, while a number of men ' are working on Hinemoa Street and in the Kuirau reserve. . At the sewerage faym near the sewer outlet into the lake, several acres of • land ha /e b.een practically reclaimed hy, unemployed labour, and the soil promises to!; he very prpductive.« iSmaller groups of men are engaged on other work, mainly street- cleaning.v Road Metalling The Puhlic Works Department is engaged metalling portions of the Central and Waerenga Roads. The Rotorua County Council is assisting by counter-sinking the roadway with the grader. Dry Bridge The- Rotorua County Council has arranged to elimiriate the dry hridge on the Tauranga main highway by making a large culvert approximately 116 feet long. Unemplo-yed workers are engaged on the task, and have so far driven the tunnel 20 feet. Unemployment Allocation The Rotorua Unemployment Committee has received notice that an allocation of £400 has. bepn made for the period ending February 20. Kelp Appreciated ; The Rotorua Unemployment Committee on Tuesday evening passed a vote of thanks to the Relief Workers' Association for their effort to assist the finances by handing over a proportion of the proceqds of the recent concert. Committee Appointment The vacancy on the Rotorua Unemployment Committee caused by the departure of the Rev. Father H. J. Speirings, has been filled by the apj pointment of the Rev. W. H. Speer.
I American Visitors £A party of American tourists travelling on one of the Crisswell conducted tours, arrived in Rotorua on Tuesday. Among their personnel are: —Mrs. J. H. Cook (New Jersey), Mrs. E. 'Clark Bacon (Derby, Cani ada) , Mrs. K. G. Arnthor and Miss I Kj G. Arnthor (Beverley Hills, Cali- ! fornia), Mrs. M.- E. Beard (Bedford, i Iowa) , Dr. J. M. Peters (Illinois) , i Mr. J. E. Callander ( Atlantic "City) , Mr. H. L. Edwards (Santa Paula, California) , Mr. H. H. Adams (Hollywood, California). The party left Rotorua yesterday afternoon. Remanded in Custody j , A man named.John Andrew Riddell ^ who was arrested'by Constables Kelly and Roberts on Tuesday afternoon, appeared before the Magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., yesterday morning- on a charge of unlawfully oh- ; taining from Messrs. P. N. Denton ; and Company jewellers, Wellington, a | canteen of cutlery and money to the | value of £12 10s. On the applica- | tion of the police, Riddell wa,s remanded in custody until February 18. The police stated that other charges were pending. To Be Prohibited A Maori first offending inebriate, who was - brought before Mr. - S. L. | Paterson, S.M., in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court yesterday • moTning, agreed, on the suggestion of His Worship to take out a prohibition order and was convicted and discharged. Practice Cricket Match A practice cricket match yesterday afternoon at the Rotorua High School ground, between a town team and a High School Eleven resulted in a win for the town players. High School batted* first and compiled 124 for six wickets (declared), the chief scorers being ICeane (41), Matthews (32), Dowling (27 not out), and -T. Berghan (10) . The town team then went to the wickets, asd took their score to 142 for 5 wickets before stumps were drawn — Ellis (58 retired), Mason (44 retired), and Speer (17). were the top scorers. A high wind considerably hampered the howlers. Tractor Permit An application to the Rotorua County Council was made by Mr. A. Harman yesterday for a permit to use an iron-tyred tractor on the county roads. It was decided to defer the issue of a permit until the traffic inspector was satisfied that all requirements had been'complied with.
