CHINESE RETREATING
JAP. ADMIRAL PREPARING- TO RELEASE FULL FORCE„ TWO DISTRICTS GUTTED . As the result of an intensive bombardment, preceding the greatest offensive so far under taken by the Japanese, the Chapei and Kiangwai districts. are now completely gutted. Hand to hand fighting, with aeroplane ? support and all the' terrors of heavy shelling in a crowded area accompanied the Japanese attack which is driving the Chinese into the open country. Further Japanese forces are -expected and in an interv'ew, Admiral Shiozawa, in charge of the Japanese naval aivision, is reported to have stated that as soon as the Chinese are in retreat, he proposes to loose his full force against them until they are six miles beyond the international Settlement, when it is not proposed to pursue them further. Strong Chinese resistance still continues, and casualties are reported to have been heavy. The foreign situation is reported to be much. easier as a result of Japan's agreement to withdraw patrols from the British and American settlements.
