CONFUSION AND TERROR IN STRICKEN CITY PEOPLE TOSSED FROM BEDS

Rec. Feb. 3, 11.10 p.m. SANTIAGO, Wednesday. Parts of the city were plunged in darkness when the earthquake occurred adding to the confusion and terror. The cries of the injured were heard on all sides. Emergency ambulances wove their way through the debris which covered the streets. The bodies of 14 dead were found huddled together on the lower floox of one large huilding, the victims having apparently been crushed to death by the falling masonry, after rushing to the ground floor hoping to find safety there. The first shock came on Tuesday afternoon and the second, the most severe at 1.15 this morning, when the population of 70,000 was asleep. Residents were tossed from their beds as the upper floors crumpled. the people then fled to parks and the open country for safety.
