maoris' long struggle beyond breakers several hours in water

WAIPUKURAU, Tuesday. Two young Maoris, Harold Smith and Sam McGregor, are now in hospital having narrowly escaped drowning at Porangahau Beach yesterday. They were rescued after having heen several hours beyond the breakers. An unsuccessful attempt was made hy R'angi Ropiha and Johnny Kuru to reach them in a boat, the former being injured. John Cook also heroically swam out, then Moss and Kuru reached Smith. Eventually James and Walter Wakefield got a boat over the breakers, which capsized on returning. Moss and Cook rescued McGregor in an exhausted state after three hours' struggle.
