clash on waterfront leads " to landing of japanese twenty sheles fired

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Ree. Feb. 2, 8 p.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The 'Daily Mail's" Nanking eorrespondent reports that • following a clash between the Chinese and Japanese on the waterfront, Japanese marines were rushed ashore supported by 20 shots in two hours from the Japanese warships, which created panic among the Chinese inhabitants, and compelled the authorities to cut off the electric light in order to prevent the warships from finding targets. Nevertheless the fort on Lyon Hill is believed to have been hit. The demonstration was ostensibly launched in order to prevent the Chinese troops from strengthening the garrison which is, installed in trenehes along the waterfront. The British and other consular staffs are contemplating the evacuation of their nationals to Shanghai. Another attempt by snipers to reach the Japanese Consulate at Shanghai commenced at 4 o'clock this morning. There was a brisk engagement from roof tops with the marines and the police guarding the Consulate, and it resulted in the snipers being driven off after one hour's fighting. A message received to-day indicates that the Japanese Government is sending a whole army division to Shanghai to relieve the marines.
