TO BEAT PARIS
LONDON SETS OUT TO BE NEW FASHION * CENTRE. EXTENSIVE CAMPAIGN. LONDON, Saturday. A London fashions group representing 50 leading houses has inaugurated a movement to establish London as the fashion centre of the future, providing garments equalling anything in the world in style, quality and price. The President of the Board of Trade (Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister), toasting the movement at a luncheon, said that the moment was most favourable owing to the abnormal importation restrictions and the genuinely popular desire to buy British. He believed that once the fashion houses captured the home market they would hold it perpetually. Over £80,000 is being expended on the campaign. Paris dressmakers are planning simplified spring modes, owing to womens' revolt against cumbersome garments, declares the Daily Mail's special correspondent. Pyjamas and petticoats are vanishing, beeause they are not practical for use with divided skirts, which women consider comfortable and practical. Hats are still tilted sideways, showing much hair. Brimmed hats are of a moderate size. The most important development in men's fashions will be the re-intro-duction of the silk scarf, following the lead given by the Prince of Wales. The smartest are blue and white spotted, worn with bowlers. Neutral shades distinguish shirtings, while ties show squares of various blends of colours.
