s Rec. Jan. 28> 5.-5* p.hi.-: • ; LONDON, Wednesday. Preparations for the Im'perial Economic Conference at Ott'awa are making good progress. " Mr. 'J. BE. Thomas, Secretary of State for the Dominions, in ari lriterview, said that representatives of the British Government Vtfrild attend unhampered hy adherence to the trade creed which hitherto had guid'ed British policy.. For the Conference to achieve lastirig and benefiriial restilts, he cbntinued, concessions must not all be on the one side. For this reason the British Government had a special interest in the viewpoint of the Dominions. Individual interests differed widely and advanced detailed examination was es^sential, hoth here and ih the Dominions. Representatives of the Governments coneelned were in contact. A Cahinet committee tinder Mr. S. M. B'ruce, Assistant TreasUref, was directing preparatory work in Australia, aiid the South African Government had appomted repres'eritatives for a similar purpose. The British G'overnirierif was discussing the various trade questions that would arise with the various interested bodies in England,- and tomorrow, he would meet the British. committee on Empire trade, comprising representatives of the Federation of British Industries, ihe' Association of British Chariibers of Commerce, the Chamber of Shipping and representatives of several manufacturing and trade associations. Mr. Thomas said that to advance the date of the conference was impossible in view of domestic affairs, hoth here dnd in the Donlinions, and also on account of the large amount of preliminary Work to! be done. Meanwhile no negotiations whatever on trade relatroris with other countries would be undertaken that would prejudice a free and unfettered discussion nt Ottawa.
