CONVICTS? OYERAWED LIFE SENTENCE MAN'S HEROIC DEFENCE OF QFFICIAL REPRIEVED MURDERER

Jan. 25, 12.10 p.m. LONDON, Monday. lIt is revealed that a life sentence prisoner named Donovan saved ihe life of the Commissioner, Colonel Turner, who was visiting the prison to inquire into grievances. Donovan rushed between Turner and a band of conviets armed with crowbars. It looked as though both would he killed, but Donovan outfaced them and by the display of the greatest pluck turned the attack. Donovan, with two others, was convicted of murder in 1928, and reprieved an hour before exeeution. He is now a changed man and says that if ever he has the luck to come out of prison he is going to show the people there is 'an unseen foree which has reformed him. The latest report states that only five. warders were injured. Eightyfour conviets received shot wounds and hundreds were struck by batons, of whom 20 had to he sent to hospital.
