MONEY and jewels vanish from ship's cabin LOSS ESTIMATED AT £500

AUCKLAND, Saturday. A daring theft, involving approximately £500 in money and jewellery was reported by an American woman passenger, Mrs L. V. Strait, on the Matson liner, Sierra, which reached Auckland to-day from Sydney. The goods comprise a diamond brooch and a ring, a cheque for 100 dollars, £20 in Australian notes, steamer tickets, passport, etc. Detectives boarded the ship on her arrival here and questioned Mrs Strait for two hours, while the Customs men rigidly scrutinised all luggage. The time of the theft has not been established, but the police and ship's officers believe that it occurred within a few minutes of the ship leaving the Sydney wharf-. Mrs Strait , says that she had the money and jewellery in a handbag, Which she put under a- pillow while farewelling friends in her cabin. When the gong sounded for nonpassengers to, leave she walked along the deck witfi her husband. She returned within five minutes for the bag, which had gone.
