HARKNESS DENIES STATEMENT
— By Telegraph — Copyright.)
SYDNEY, Sunday. Mr. Don Hal'kness, replying to a stat'ement by Mr. Mostyn from New Zealancb published in the "Sydney Morning Herald" on Saturday, reitates his denial that he ever claimed that "Wizard" Smith's car was capable of 300 miles an hour, and that if it were successful, he would be prepared to alter the gear ratio and attempt greater speeds to 300 miles. Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined it could be possible to better the reeord by 55 miles an hour in the Enterprise, he said. If she breaks the record by five or 10 miles per hour, which she was capable of doing, it would be an excellent performance. Mr. Smith himself, in articles in the old "Sunday Times" and in the "Sunday Guardian," had claimed, hs he now said, that the car would be capable of doing 300 miles per hour. That was long before the drawings were made or the larger engine had been invented. Mr. Harkness added that he notes that Mr. Mostyn regrets having to insist that he, Harkness, had claimed a speed of 300 miles an hour for the Enterprise. Why, he asked, should Mr Mostyn have any regrets if he were sure of what he was talking about. There was no occasion for apologies.
