Particular appreciation is expressed on the realignment of thp highway and the elimination of many of the bad corners. Rotoiti Fishing Fishing from the launch Mararoa during the week, Messrfc. Lees and Leddingham took catches of 10 and 7 fish on two separate days on Rotoiti. All of the fish were taken on the fiy, and were in excelleiit condition. The average weight of the catch was 541bs., and the heaviest fish turned the seales at 81bs. Fishing Licemses Saies of fishing licenses are reported by the various district agents to be well up to those of last year at the present period. Very heavy saies were reported by some agents prior to Christmas, and it is hoped that, in spite of the -depression, the final totals will bear favourable comparison with those for last year. Woman's Strange Request Two young women were sitting in their car in Tutanekai Street on Saturday, when a woman whom they had never seen before, closely followed by two ihenj hurried up to them and said: "Drive me to the police station as quickly as you can." Before either of them could answer the woman rushed off again without another word, and the three disappeared along the street, leaving the occupants of the ciar completely bewilder'ed by the unusual episode. Glow-Wormc in Okere Caves. The majority of those who visit the Okere Falls do- so by daylight, and for that rea'son miss One of the most interesting features of the two caves above the pool into which the fall plunges. By night the roofs of bpth caves are spangled with the iights of glow-worms which have the additional advantage that they do riot suffer from that sensitive shrinking which causes the glow-worms in j:he Waitomo Caves to dim their lights at the first hint of noise. The tiny green lights continue to glow even when a match is struck in the cave. Flyittg Tour. In order to nlap out suitable landing grounds and make arrangements for trips, Flying DMcer Mdtheson, pilot to Rotorua Airways Ltd., yesterday undertook an extensive tour of the Bay of Plenty area. Flying Officer Matheson visited Opotiki, Ohope Beach, Te Teko, Taneatua, and Tauranga before returning to Rotorua. At Mt. Maunganui he stated, there were approximately 3000 people on the beach, but owing to unfavourable cross winds he was.unable to undertalce any fiights. Journey Resumed. Mr. Michael Standnicki, who left Auckland on January 15 on a walking tour of the world, left Rotorua early this morning, to continue his journey to Wellington. Mr, Stadnicki will follow the National Park route and proposes to save distance by takihg the short-cut frohi Tokaanu through to Waiuru. Popular Seaside Resort. The tourist and holiday trafiic at Mount Maunganui this season has increased beyond all expectations being at least 25 per cent greater than in any previous season. The numbers of visitors to the beach during Christmas and New Year was a record and all the business people report satisfactory business. There is still a large number of holidaymakers at the beach which seems definitely to have established itself as one of the most popular seaside resorts in the province. Two excursions visited the Mount during the week-end, one from Hamilton and the other from Taneatua and stations along the East Coast railway line, and the beach yesterday afternoon was most picturesque with the many-coloured costumes of the bathers. Considerable interest was taken in a scratch sports meeting held on the beach. I.O.O.F. Picnic. Rotorua members of the I.O.O.F. with their friends, spent a most enjoyable day yesterday at Hongi's Track when the annual lodge picnic was held. Weather conditions were very pleasant and in the delightful surroundings of the track, the picnic had everything in its favour. A very large crowd made the trip (in itself a most enjoyable excursion) and the numbei'S carried by the buses were considerably supplemented by the, private ears. A sports programme was carried out and capable organisation catered very adequately for the requirements of all the picnickers.
