DRASTIC FEDERAL ACTION IN SOUTH AUSTRALIAN POSITION REGULATIONS NULLIFIED

Rec. Jan. 21, 9.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, Thursday. There were dramatic developments in the Port Adelaide shipping trouble to-day, when the Commonwealth Government issued regulations nullifying those of the South Australian Gov ernment. Once again it will be lawful for ship owners to employ volunteer labour on the waterfront. Mr. J. G. Latham, Federal Attorney General, in a statement, said the Compionwealth Government had a special responsibility under the Constitution in respect to maintenance and control of services in the interStatp and foreign trade. It would not abdicate its responsibility because of violepce or threats of violence. Meanwliile the Government invites organisatjons of employers and employees concerned to submit suggestions for a permanent solution of the difficplties on the waterfront.
