GREEN BEETLE SCARCE FORTNIGHTLY REPORTS SHOW GOOD BAGS HAVE BEEN TAKEN NORTHERLY WINDS PREVAIL ' j 6Reports of rangers received by the Conservator of Fish and Game during the past f ortnight, indicate that some appreciable catches have heen. recorded. The weather generally has hjeen fine with the prevalence of a northerly wind militating against better restilts. The wind coming occasionally from a south-westerly direction provided more favourable results. The green beetle was not so abundant, and as a result anglers lured their fish mostly with a longtailed fly such as the "Tamati" and Ferris' Fancy. Over last week-end an exceptionally heavy rainfall was "experienced, and for a period of 17 hours a fall of 2.17 inches was. recorded. All lakes rose accordingly. It is anticipated that this rainfall "Will give an all-round improvement to fishing conditions. Whakatane and Opotiki Area In this area up till the time of the rainfall, all' rivers were reaching a below normal state. The Green Beetle hatch in this atea is also diminishing in quantity, but other trout food is plentiful. The fish generally are still improving in condition. The best catch registered in this dktriet was that of Mr. Harry Addison, who took 13 fish averaging 21bs., his largest being a 6|-pounder. These were taken on the Inanga and Toi Toi in the Waimana River. Other catches are as follows: — Mr. W. Rickerby, nine fish, average 211bs., largest 31bs., taken on fly and Toi Toi in the Waimana. Robert Carruthers seeured nine fish averaging 251bs., heaviest fish 51bs. These were taken on the fly at the Waioeka. F. Claydon seeured seven fish, average 2£lbs., largest fish 3ilbs., taken with the fly in the Tarawera River. Mr. Allan Prince took six fish on the spoon in the Whakatane River, averagain lllbs., largest 31bs. Several other catches ranging from one to three fish, averaging about 2Hbs. in weight, were made. Wairakei In this locality, Mr. J. S. Cole and Mr. Sinden fished for ten days and seeured an aggregate total of 205 very good-conditioned fish, taken on the fly and spoon, in the Waikato River near Rotokawa. The average weight of these fish was 311bs. Mr. Abel took his limit, with an average weight of 41bs., heaviest fish 61bs., .aken on tlie fiy and spoon near Wairakei. The same gentleman also took 12 fish averaging 4£lbs., largest fish olbs., on one of his other fishing expeditions. Mr. Fulljames also took his limit, the average being 31bs., and his heaviest fish 51bs. These were taken on the Dry Fly at the Waikato River near Rotokawa. These fish were taken one evening. J. Tupara seeured nine fish averaging 3Jlbs., heaviest fish 5Jlbs., at the Aratiatia Rapids during one day's fishing. Fish condition. taken in this locality were all in good Rotorua Quite good reports in this district have been received regarding the fishing in Lake Rotorua at the mouths of the Ngongotaha and Waitete Rivers. In f.our days Mr. McCnuley seeured 37 fish averaging 25ibs., largest 41bs., all taken on the fiy at Waitete. Mr. McPherson seeured 13 fish, averaging 2albs., larg--,st 31bs., while fly fishing at Hamurana". Colonel Blakley, for three l&ys' fishing, seeured 10 fish, averaging 2Hbs., heaviest 31bs. One evenwhile fly fishing at Okere, Mr. Batton seeured five, averaging 2ilbs., largest fish 31bs. Some quite good fishing was also .experienced in the Kaituna River, one angler registeving an evening catch of five fish, averaging 211bs., largest fish 31bs. Mr. F. Walker, using the fly at Waitete, also lad two excellent catches of 15 fish, average 2£lbs., largest 41bs.; and 12 fish, average 2§lbs., largest fish Lfilbs. All good fish. Mr. Suttie, in ,ho launch Symbol, on two days, took 30 fish, averaging 2:]lbs., largest fish lilbs., all taken on the fly at the Awahoe. This gentleman, prior to leaving for Scotland, fished for 39 days, obtaining 273 fish, averaging approximately 22'lbs. The total weight of these fish, which were taken on the fly, was 7401bs. The heaviest fish was 5|lbs., and all were in good condition. Messrs. Lees and Leddingham, fishing in Lake Rotoiti, took ten fish on the fly, largest 6|lbs., for a half-day's fishing. These fish were in good condition. Mr. Turner, in the launch Shamrock, seeured 15 fish, average 3Slbs., heaviest fish olbs.; also 11 fish, 2§lbs. average; largest fish 51bs. All were very goodconditioned fish taken on the fly at the Awahoe. Mr. Shearer and party, at Lake Tarawera, took 16 fish, average 421bs., heaviest fish 7£lbs. These fish were all in good condition. Mr. H. Smith, of Hastings, seeured six fish, averaging 2Jlbs. His heaviest fish was 3Jlbs. All fish taken on the fiy at Lake Rotoma. Colonel Mellor, using the fly "Tamati," at Lake Okareka, succeeded in obtaining seven good-conditioned fish. His heaviest fish weighed 4ilbs. Taupo District
The fishing during the period has improved slightly. The condition of the fish has also improved. The number of anglers has increased considerably. Several limits have beeii taken by fiy fishermen. One angler seeured his limit fly fishing in one of the western bays four days in succession. The launches have all been much busier than during Christmas and New Year. Some good catches of nice-conditioned fish are reported. Dry fly anglers have been rather disappointed with the rise in the Waikato River, which has not been good during the past weelc. Tongariro. — There has been a small run of fresh fish. The fishing is hard. Anglers are finding it hard to take more than three or four fish per'day. One angler took seven goodconditioned fish out of the Log Pool, the largest 8^1bs. Hatepe. — Is fishing moderately well, but a little patchy. One angler
and his wife camped here for a fortnight and landed 67 fish, the heaviest 9£lbs., and averaging 51bs. Condition fair to good. Other rods getting a few fish daily. Waitahanui. — Is fishing well at times, but patchy. Most anglers getting three or four fish daily. The best fish are taken in the late. evening. Fish up to 81bs. have been landed. Three boats trolling in the bay on the 7th all got their limit. Dry Fly. — The Waikato River Uas not been so good this week, the rise has been a little disappointing. Twelve to 14 rods can be counted nightly, mostly picking up a few fish. Details of catches are as follows : — J. Power and party, from New Plymouth, in the launch Tainui, took 183' fish, averaging 51bs., heaviest 81bs., on fly and spoon on a four days' fishing trip at Whangamata and Whakaipo Bays. Catches registered on one day included: — Messrs. Sellers and party in the launch Wizbang, who took 29 fish, average 4!lbs., . heaviest fish 62-lhs. All fair to good fish, taken on the spoon in Waitahanui Bay. Mr. O'Meara and party in the launch Sunbeam, seeured 28, average 51bs., largest fish 7!lbs., taken on the spoon at Karangahape. In the launch Dawn, Mr. Reynolds and party took 27 fish, averaging 51bs., with the heaviest fish 81bs. These were all good fish taken on the spoon at "Whakaipo Bay. The same gentleman and party also recorded 26, with an average of 51bs., and -the heaviest fish 71bs., on the fly at Rangitira Point and Whakaipo Bay. Fishing with the fly at Rangitira Point, Mr. Adams and party, in the launch Sunbeam, seeured 20 fish, with an average weight of 4glbs. Their heaviest fish was 61bs. Judge Smith and party, in the launch Dawn, seeured 20 fish, averaging 4glbs., their heaviest fish turning the scales at 6ilbs. Other smaller launch catches were registered a& follows: — Mr. Yates, 15; Mr. Short, 14; Mr. Butler and party, 14; Mr. Crump, 12; Mr. Chapman, 11; and Mr. Cartridge, 10. A notable performance is that of J. Tupara, who took his limit with the fly on four successive days on the shore at Whangamata Bay. The fish average 4£bs.
