CABINET COMMITTEE MAKES PROGRESS WITH TASK ANGLO.-IRISH DISCUSSIQN
RUGBY, Thursday. ■ A m,eeting was held last night of the Cabinet Committee which has before it the problem of correcting the adverse balanoe of trade when it was s|iown good progress had been made with the task. 1 The "Times" recalls that in a speech iri the House of Commons last September, the Foreign Secretary (Sir Jqhn Simon), declared that the country would have to abandon its policy of free imports, and he added "there fs a growipg feeling in Ministerial circles that legislative action will have to be taken as soon as the House of Commons meets again. When the committee has presented its report to Cabinef it will be fpr Miqisters to decide how action can be taken with the least disloeation of trp.de." The Right Hon. W. Runciman, President of the Board of Trqde, yesterday reeeived representatives of the Itish Free State. The discussion was concerned with the possibilities of improving the trade between the two cpuntries, and of sepuring the closest practical collaboration in trade problems. Mr. Runciman stated that he and his cplleagues were anxious to co-operate with the Free State Govern mefit and explained that on the reassembly of Parliament a gtatement would be made as to their' policy for deyeloping inter-Commonwealth trade. It is anticipated that a further order undpr the Abnormal Importations Act will be issued shortly.
