FIRE AT COTTAGE
BRIGADE ARRIVE IN TIME TO PREVENT SERIOUS DAMAGE OCCUPANTS ABSENT A telephone message was received at the fire station at 12.32 yesterday afternoon, calling the brigade to a fire in a small cottage iri Grey Street, owned and occupied by Mr. Harold Biddle. When the firemen arrived the building was full of smoke and flames could be seen in a corner of one room. • As no one was at home and the house was locked up, the door had to be forced. It was found that it was unnecessary to use the hose, the flames not having got a good hold, and a few buckets of water were sufficient to extinguish them. The fire apparently had been caused by an electric iron, which was left with the power turned on and resting on a wooden form. The damage done included the burning of the form, a case of fruit, a carpet, and a few boards of the wall, the damage being estimated at about £10:
