CALMNESS OF BRITISH ATTITUDE "IT IS THE NAKED TRUTH"
-By Telegraph—Copyrlght).
LONDON, Sunday. The "Daily Mail" in a lead'er, discounts the theory that Dr. Bruening is bargaining, says: "His pronouncemo'nt means what it says; it is the naked truth — -Germany cannot pay. France might be willing to afford temporary relief, but is nqt; prepared to go as far as Dr. Bruening's wish. It is the- memory of her ravished l'ands and resultant sacrifices which prevents France from subscribing to Britain's poliey of cancelling the war debts and reparations, especially while America is obstinate." The "Daily Herald," in an outspoken editorial, says: "Dr, Bruening has merely bluntly announced what nine out of ten have long since realised is the inevitable course of events. It has been an elaborate game of pretence — a gigantic childish,, make , believe. Everybody has known that the Young Plan is dead. The French are naturally scandalised, and apt to exhibit slightly hysterical prudishness on these occasions. Great BrL tain should. not tolerate the coercion of Germany into payments."
