SATURDAY'S CRICKET
SECOND ROUND NGONGOTAHA ROUTS ALBION BY AN INNINGS HIGH SCHOOL'S GOOD TOTAL The opening matches in the Rotorua Cricket Association's competitions commenced on Saturday, the oue day being sufficient to decide the match in the Albion versus Ngongotaha ftxture. Albion, who are leading in the competition, and who had not suffered defeat up to last Saturday, collapsed badly against the Ngongotaha bowlers and although the latter team made but 54 runs in their first innings, Albion, who made 20 runs in their first strike, failed, by one run, to make it necessary for their opponents to bat a second time. Ngongotaha, therefore, secured a four-point win on the first day of the match. High School opened well by scoring 252 runs against Old Boys, and at stumps City were leading Mamaku by 68 runs on the first innings. ALBION DEFEATED With their side much below usual strength, the championship leaders, Albion, suffered their first defeat on Saturday at the hands of Ngongotaha. Sensationally low scoring was a feature of the game, Albion knocking up only 20 runs in their first inn: ings and 33 in their second, while Ngongotaha managed to make 54, thanks to a last wicket stand -which produced 31 runs. Ellis, who took 7 wickets for 8 runs, was mainly responsible for Albion's first inning's collapse, securing most of his wickets with a ball which kept low. Ngongotaha's opening was as sensational as that of Albion, Harris being caught at the wickets off Burton's third ball, and Burney going lbw in the same over. Six wickets were down for eight runs, Burton keeping a good length, and with their score at nine wickets for 23 Ngongotaha were in pretty much the same plight as Albion. However, Marcroft an=' Turton, the last two batsmen, by hard hitting, raised the score to 54 before
they attempted an impossible run, the last named losing his wicket. Albion's second innings was as much a procession as the first, McGill and Gresham being the only batsmen to reach double figures. With Boord, these two batsmen scored all but one of their side's runs, and Albion suffered defeat by an innings and one run for a little over three hours' play. HIGH SCHOOL BAT WELL
High School won the toss from Old Boys, and taking first strike on a good wicket, compiled the good score of 252 runs by steady batting Hinton and Beale opened the inn- ' ings, but Hinton went early, being run out when his score was one, and the total four runs. Beale, however. continued to bat attractively and with • Higgins added 114 runs before the hext wicket fell. Beale was caught after a bright ..knock for 83 runs, which included ; eight f ours. Higgin's total was 29 'runs. Hampson (15), Dawson (26) and Dowling (21), played good cricket and -were the main contributors tcthe score after the second wicket had fallen. To Bergham went the honour of hittjng the only "sixer" of 'the innings, which was his only scoring stroke, he being caught by Spedding off Heley's bowling soor afterwards. . Eight bowlers were tried by Olc Boys, Hart being the most effective ' taking five wickets for 44 runs of "10 overs. Hart and Ewert opened for Old Boys £nd at 13, Ewert was stumned by Hampson for three runs. The second wicket fell at 29, Spedding being caught by Clark when his total was 12. Beckett did not last long, Godsalve taking his wicket when six runs were on the board. Hansen and McCutcheon carried on, but the total was only 19 when the second wicket fell, and but for D. Simmons (21 not out) and Reed (19) no opposition was offered to the City bowlers, the innings closing for 76 runs. Godsalve bowled well in taking five wickets for 26 runs, as also did Alexander, whose figures were three wickets for 22 runs. Harding and Corbett kept the batsmen quiet, and were unlucky not to take wickets. With three wickets down for 24 runs, City's chances of heading Mamaku did not appear very bright, but by indulging in some big hitting Godsalve saved the day for the side, and by scoring 79. runs was mainly responsible for City closing their innings 68 runs ahead of their opponents. Seven "sixers" and four fours were included in Godsalve's total, all the Mamaku bowlers having their averrges shattered. Dodds secured the most wickets for Mamaku, Reed also bowling well. Details: —
