Popular Vocalist Returns Memories of one of Rotorua's most pleasing and popular vocalists were recalled during'the two nights' season of "Diane Develops" at the Majestic Theatre on Thursday and Friday nights last. Unannounced on the programme; not seen on the stage; yet old residents immediately recognised.the vocalist who was heard from the wings. It was Mrs. Bonnington, nee Miss Tirita Butt. Mrs. Bonnington has lost none of the beauty and charm of her voice, and many will look f orward to her singing at the return season of "Diane Develops" next Thursday and Friday. Tourist Traffic Quiet After a very brisk Christmas and New Year period there has been a certain amount of slackening in the volume of tourist traffic in Rotorua.. Although the numbers of visitors at the conclusion of the old year far exceeded expectations, and many new hpliday-makers are arriving daily, bo'th visitors and residents have remarked on the quietness of the town compared with the corresponding period last . year.
Speeding Motorists The provision of a bitumen surface on the Te Ngae Road has tempted motorists to disregard the fact that it is necessary to observe a reasonable speed limit. Unwary drivers on Sunday had an unpleasant surprise in store for them. The Borough Traffic Inspector, Mr. D. M. Ford, stationed himself near the end of the section and caught several of them, and they will duly appear before the court.
Thefts At the Baths Since the opening of the new swimmih'g pool in the Blue Bath bathers have had money and various articles of walue stolen from their clothing. The' thefts continuing, police investigation became necessary, and on Saturday an arrest was made of a ybung man, who will appear before the court this morning charged with the alleged theft of a small sum of money. Barnking Diploma Exams The complete list of members of the staff of the Bank of NeW Zealand at Rotorua, who were successful in the recent diploma examinations, conducted by the New Zealand University, is as follows: — C. F. J. Davey, Securities I; A. J. Harron, Securities I and Banking II; E. J. Sexton, Securities I and Bankingl; R. R. Wood, Banking I, Bills of Exchange and Banking and Commercial Law I. C. B. Randerson, Book- ' keeping and Chrrency and Banking; Mr. A. J. Harron has now completed the full course for the Banking Di- ' ploma.
Opara Company Visitors. About 20 iriembers of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company now playing in Auckland paid a visit to Rotorua yesterday. One party left the city by car immediately ; after the show on Saturday riight aifd arrived here at five o'cloek in the morning, while the others made a more leisurely journey and arrived at noon. Both parties viewed the sights at Whakarewarewa and in the evening were entertained at the home of Guide Rangi, Rough Roads to Seaside. Several motorists to the Bay of Plenty beaches during the week-end have expressed dissatisfaction with the state of the main routes to the various seaside resorts. They say that the roads around Te Puke and Paengaroa are so corrugated and pot holed that it is unsafe to travel even at a normal speed in a light car. The road to Maketu is also very bumpy as also is the turn off from the main road to Ohope. Attraction of Seaside. The warm and sunny weather yesterday attracted many Rotorua residents to the seaside and in the morning a regular stream of cars and bpses was headed for the various beaches in the Bay of Plenty. Maketu appeared to be the most popular, probably because it is the nearest, but Mount Maunganui and Ohope also, received their fair share of picnickers. Tauranga Jubilee Carnival. Mr. E. M. Finlayson, who has been in Rotorua for some time as carnival organiser, on Thursday evening attended a meeting of the Jubilee Committee of the Tauranga Borough Council. Mr. Finlayson has been engaged by the council to organise the Tauranga Jubilee Celebrations which, in addition to f eaturing old Tauranga days and old identities will include a fancy regatta and aquatic carnival at Mount Maunganui. A Jubilee Ball and the usUal processions will he held while on the final day a meeting of the Tauranga Racing Club will take place.
