-By Telegraph— Copyright).
Rec. Jan. 5, 9.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, Tuesday. The weather was pleasant when the Test match Australia v. South Africa was resumed to-day, but the wicket was showing signs of wear. Four balls suffieed to finish Australia's innings with no addition to the score. South Africa commenced their seeond innings Slowly. Christy livened things up, being partial to Ironmonger, whom he frequently and vigorously drove off. Fifty was reached in 58 minutes and then the scoring hecame very slow again. Christy reached 50 in 58 minutes, and the century was brought up in 130 minutes. When the partnership had realised 102 runs, Christy was smartly taken behind the wicket. He had batted for 112 minutes. He hit five bcundaries during an innings which was a mix.ture of patience and aggressiveness. Mitchell took not the slightest risk, but missed many opportunities of scoring. At the tea interval the score was two for 133., Mitchell was dismissed by the second ball after tea. He had batted for 177 minutes, but hit no boundaries. Morkel went in the next over, and a big change thus suddenly came over the game. Taylor proceeded very quietly for a time, with neat strokes obtaining 11 for one of Wall's overs. The Taylor and Cameron partnership . added 40 runs. The batsmen were mainly on the defensive when they should have been hitting the tired bowling. Taylor batted for 108 minutes, and hit four boundaries. The last half hour's batting was very dull. The innings had lasted 259 minutes when stumps were drawn. The attendance was 9000 and the receipts £373.
