— By Telegraph — Copyright).
Rec. Dec. 31, 5.0 p.m. WASHINGTON, Wednes. Almost hysterical fears have been aroused by the delivery of the bomb packages, particularly. following the delivery to-day by a railway express of a dynamite bomb marked, 'Silver Spoon," addressed to the Italian Con-sul-General at Cleveland, the sender's name on the package being that of the Consul's greatest friend in New Yorlc. The Consul immediately made a trunk line telephone call and when he learned that no package had been sent by his friend, the police were summoned and the box was taken to a rifle range, where it was exploded by long distance rifle shots, the effect being the boring of a hole of thirty feet in circumference in the ground. At the same time a similar package was sent to Mr. Oscar Durante, editor of an Italian vernacular newspaper in Chicago. It was refused acceptance by the employees and was handed back and forth all day in a crowded loop district in a motor lorry before it could be secured by the police. The Italian Ambassador, Count de Martini, called at the State Department to-day after which prompt measures were taken to protect Italian officials throughout the country from what is described as one of the widest bomb plots discovered here. The police everywhere are being stationed in the homes of Italian representatives and prominent ItalianAmericans in Chicago.
