-By Telegraph — Copyright).
Rec. Dec. 31, 1.25 a.m. MELB'OURNE, Wednes. it is regarded as a surprising development that the United Country Party, led by Dr. Earle Page, has declined office in the new Federal Cabinet now heing formed by Mr. J. A. Lyons. Dr. Earle Page, at a conference here with Mr. Lyons to-day, indicated that his party would be satisfied if given the Customs portfolio as the people in the country were extremely anxious for the revision of the tariff. Mr. Lyons replied that he was unable to agree to this, whereupon Dr Earle Page assured him that the Country Party would continue friendly in its relations with the United Australia Party, but would accept ho Cabinet responsibility. Mr. Lyons expressed his regret at the turn of events and .said he was most anxious that the Country Party should accept office in view of the arrangement under which the eleetion was fought.
