PHAR LAP
ENTERED FOR ELEVEN BIG RACES IN AMERICA SAILING BY MONOWAI WELLINGTON, Tuesday. According to Mr. W. M. Neilsen, veterinary surgeon in charge of the racehorse Phar Lap, everything is in readiness for taking the famous racer on the trip to San Francisco and thence to Mexico. Mr. Neilsen arrived from Sydney by the Monowai to-day, accompanied by E. J. Martin, an apprentice rider. Mr. Neilsen said that all arrangements had been made for running Phar Lap in the Agua Calientes Handicap after the horse had spent some two months in Mexico. Phar Lap will be put on board the Monowai tomorrow, and throughout the voyagewill be housed in a specially-pfepared box, situated on one of the top decks. He will he fed with New Zealand grass, a considerable quantity of which has been shipped. His box will be floored with sand. The Monowai is due to arrive in San Francisco on January 15, and Phar Lap will be kept in that city for several weeks after which he will be entrained to Mexico. There he will be allowed about two months for ac- , climatisation purposes. Provision has been made for feeding him on special grass to be sent to Mexico from San Francisco. His first race- will be the Agua Calientes Handicap, for about £20,000 in English money. Mr. Neilsen said Phar Lap had been entered in 11 big races in America. He felt confident that the horse would produce all his Australian form, as the climate -in Mexico and Southern California, he understood, was very similar to what Phar Lap had been used to for many months past. Mr. Woodcock, who has been in charge of Phar Lap since he- left Sydney, will also leave by the Monowai to-morrow.
