DEFENCE MINISTER AND J. S. GARDEN BOTH DEFEATED U.A.P. MAJORITY GROY7S

Rec. Dec. 30, 12.15 a.m. SYDNEY, Tuesday. The distribution of preferences is now completed in the Macquarie electorate, w;here the Minister of Defence, Mr. A. Chifley, (Federal Labour) has been defeated by Mr. Lawson (United Australia Party) by 456 votes. Finality has also been reached in Cook electorate, where the sitting member, the Federal Labour candidate, Mr. Riley junior, triumphed over the well-known J. S. (Jock) Garden, who was the Lang-plan candidate, by 713 votes. The results of this contest had been awaited with tbe greatest interest. Mr. Garden's defeat reduced the- Lang Planners, otherwise the Beasleyites, to four in the House of 75. Hitherto they had five members. The state of the parties now is : United Australia Party 38 United Country Party 16 Independent 2 Federal Labour 14 Beasleyites 4 Doubtful 1
