SALVATION ARMY

POPULAR SONG SERVICES MARK RETURN OF CAP. HAYES A very successful series of meetings was conducted by Staff-Captain Sam Hayes, at the Salvation Army Hall during, the weelc-end. An interesting feature of the Sunday morning service was the dedication of the infant daughter of Captain and Mrs. G. R. Thompson, of the local corps. A large and enthusiastic audience at the after church community song service enjoyed the singing of the old hymn favourites and a number of choruses set to popular tunes were quickly learnt. Assisting the song leader was a well balanced orchestra comprised of Messrs. Painton, Bendall, Bragg, Tattersall and Ferry. On behalf of the older residents of the town Mr. Tapper welcomed Capt. Hayes back and spoke of his great success as officer in charge of the Salvation Army Institute in the days of the "Blue Boys." Mr. F. Oldham who returned to New Zealand on the same hospital ship as the StaffCaptain, on beha'IT of the returned soldiers, spoke of the high esteem in which he had been held, as a soldier on active service, as a patient, and then as a Salvation Army officer in this town. Staff-Captain Hayes who has recently been appointed in charge of the Auckland Division of the Salvation Army left for Opotiki yesterday.
