A request by French bankers for higher intere'st than 1% per cent. on their deposits in New York has been unanimously refused by New York bankers. The latter have expressed the view that they would rather see the deposits withdrawn. The annual report of Lloyd's Shipping Register states that there are now 10,500,000 tons of shipping laid up out of a gross tonnage afloat 'of 70,000,000. The London and North Eastern Railway Company is spending £5,000,000 and the London Midland and Scottish £2,000,000 on railway improvements during the current winter.
