J. A. CARLTON
UNABLE TO ACCEPT INVITATION TO NEW ZEALAND Official notification that he was unable to accept an invitation to visit New Zealand this season was received this week by the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre from J. A. Carlton, Australian sprint champion and re-cord-holder. Recently the Wellington Centre wrote to Carlton inviting him to compete at meetings in the Wellington district in January or February, and asking him to name a good distance runner and a -cyclist who would also be available to make the trip. "I desire to thank your centre for the invitation that has been extended to me," wrote , Carlton. "Regretfully and through force of circumstances I have to decline it. As you are no doubt aware the athletic season this year is partieularly strenuous in view of the forthcoming Olympic Games, and naturally more demands have been made upon me than usual. Circumstances, therefore, prevent me from accepting the invitation which 'I would like very much to avail myself of." In a personal letter to Mr. T. S. Philpott, secretary of the Wellington Centre, Carlton said he was very disappointed at being unable to make the trip, because he cherished wonderful memories of his two trips to New Zealand in past seasons. "The season over here has been very wet," he added, "and we have had hardly a fine week-end now for months, and naturally times have suffered somewhat."
