SUCCESSFUL MEETING
ATHLETIC CLUB GOOD TIMES AND FINISHES AT BOXING DAY CARNIVAL VISITORS' PERFORMANCES Ideal weather conditions and a track in first class running order assisted the Rotorua Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club at its first full day carnival held at the Government grounds on Boxing Day. The clubs initial venture proved a most encouraging success and at the conclusion of the day visiting athletes paid a tribute to the efficient organisation and control of the events.
Some excellent times were recorded and some very close fmishes. Rotorua athletes had their full measure of success against formidable opposition from Auckland, Hawera, New Plymouth, Hamilton and Taupo. A feature of the day was the outstanding cycle riding of the well known Auckland rider, II. R. Durglie, who rode first in the mile event and second in the two and three miles, in each case against strong fields and a stiff handicap. The three mile cyele event was won by a very promising local rider. P. Bell who also made an excellent showing over the two mile distance. In this race he was lying second after the sixth lap, when he fell.
The well known Auckland half miler, L. Barker, won the 880 yds. event comfortably in good time and with a nicely judged finish. Atho1 Garlick, of Taupo, ex-University quarter miler, put up a very good performance' in the 220 yds. low hurdles event which he won in the , good time of 27 4-5 sec. Mr. F. Cooper of Auckland, another well known athlete won the mile off 50 yds. in 4 mins. 21 2-5 sec. The N.Z. standard time for the 220 yds. was equaled by Cambie of Auckland in 22 2-5 sec. In this race Cambie was closely pressed by Roberts, the young Auckland secondary schools champion, who ran ihto second place after mistaking the finishing post and pulling up too early. The junior 220 yds. event was won by C. J. Thompson of Hamilton in the promising time® of 23 2-5 sec. He also won the quarter mile handicap from 15 yds. in 50 sec — 1-5 better than the N.Z. standard time foi this distance. S. J. Gudsell of Auckland made a detrmined attempt to break the New Zealand standard time for the half-
mile walk, but after an excellent exhibition of walking, missed his objective by two seconds. Gudsell covered the distance in the excellent time of 3 min, 17 sec. The organisation of the meeting refleeted a great deal of credit upon the officials in charge and visiting Auckland athletes described the meeting as the best conducted gathering which they had attended. During the course of the eveningV carnival attractions, the trophies won at the meeting were presented by the Mayor Mr. T. Jackson, from the rotfUnda in the Town Square. In a few brief remarks, Mr. Jackson congratulated the competitors on the standard set at the meeting and stressed the value of amateur sport in inculcating a spirit of service as an offset against the competitive spirit which his worship contended was, at the root of many of our present troubles. The president of the club, Mr. G. H. Mason also congratulated the competitors and expressed his satisfaction with the standard maintained
