PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY
Carnival activities to-day are confined almost wholly to the evening. During the day ttie finals in the Tennis Tournament will be decided. ' At 6.30 p.m. the Maoris of Whakarewarewa and Ohinemutu will prepare for the real event of the day, a genuine old-time Maori Hangi, in the Town Square. The term hangi is properly the name of the oven in whieh the Maori used to cook his food, and the first part of the proceedings will be the preparation of the hangi b^' natives skilled in the art. When the food has been put to cook, a picturesque Maori entertainment, including songs, hakas and poi dances and tableaux in costume will be staged by the natives, all the most skilled artists and the sweetest singers of the tribes being engaged. About 10 p.m., at the conclusion of the entertainment, supper will be served, the food cooked in the hangi, which will be a revelation to those who have not previously had an> opportunity to enjoy its virtues, being handed round in Maori kits of flax and raupo. For the supper the small charge of sixpence per head will be made toward the cost of the food. The kits may be ' retained as souvenirs. To-morrow night the grand plain and fancy dress ball will be held in the Sylvana ballroom, near the Borough motor camp.
