MUSICAL RECITAL

MISS M. MACKENZIE'S PUPILS The pupils of Miss Margaret Mackenzie gave their annual recital at St. John's Hall last Friday evening, when a representative gathering of citizens attended to enjoy the treat provided by the young pianists of Rotorua. The programme was varied in character, chosen from the works of the older masters and modern composers, and the interpretation given by the performers was exceedingly interesting. The recital opened with a duet, the martial Turkish Patrol, by the Misses Ruth Holland and Betty Mackenzie, which gave a eheery zest to the proceedings. This was followed by two solos by a miniature pianiste, Miss Joan Robertson, who played her pieces with amusing naivete. " Other small artistes were the Misses Joan Hay, Barbara Holland and Betty Mackenzie, who performed with the ability and sang froid almost of seasoned virtuosi. Ampngst the older pupils, the Misses Jessie Wallace, Clivena Young and Olive Manson exhibited more than ordinary ability in their executiop and technique, and Miss Ailsa Mackenzie gave a brilliant rendering of Delibes Naila Waltz. Most of the items were vigorously applauded, and the players were rewarded with the usual tribute of flowers. Only one youthful Padrewski, Master Gordon Lloyd, contributed to the programme, with the well-known studies, Ecossaise, by Beethoven, and the Merry Peasant, by Schumann. As a variation to the instrumental items, Miss Minna Kronfelt, the wellknown soprano, sang several songs with charming artistry and interpretation. At the conclusion of the recital Miss, Mackenzie thanked the audience for their attendance and kindly interest in the musical progress of the young folk; and stated that she hoped to renew their musical interest again next year.
