-By Telegraph— Copyright).

Rec. Dec. 22, 11 p.m. SYDNEY, Tuesday. The State Autor-General reports that the Departmental expenditure for the year ended June 30 totalled £20,318,000, of which only £2,540,000 was provided from the Departments' earnings, leaving a balance of £17,750,000. to be found by the general revenue. The sum of £5,000,000 for Education was the most costly item. _ The report draws attention to the disparity between the cost of collection of relief tax, 45/4 per £100, and of income tax, 22/4 per £100, adding: "It seems reasonable to expect that eharges of this nature against the relief funds should be kept as low as possible. The income tax eollection amounted to £6,183,000, but the Auditor criticised the method by which too many assessments became subject to amendment, raising doubt as to the general accuracy of the assessments.
