LONDON, Monday. Professor Deycke, who is charged at Lubeck with the death of seventysix babies, caused a sensation in Court when he announced that he had inoculated himself with the Calmette serum, in order to prove that the children's death was due to a mistake. His family are watching the professor, who declares: "I am perfectly certain of survival, but that will not restore life to those poor babies. Should I die I shall at least be spared the unspeakable horrors of this case." The Lubeck tragedy has attraeted considerable attention throughout the world. Professor Deycke inoculated a large number of babies with Calmette serum, which it is alleged was an antidote for tuberculosis. Most of the patients sickened and died, and it is alleged that the deaths were due to the serum. The professor is charged with causing deaths.
