SHANGHAI, Tuesday. It is now offieially confinned that Chiang Kai-shek has finally resigned the position as head of the Nanking Government, retaining, however, his military appointment as Commander-in-Chief. Confusion prevails at Nanking. More serious developments are feared. Lin Sen, the veteran party leader, issued a circular telegram on his assumption of the office of aeting-Pre-sident in succession to Chiang. The students greeted the declaration with howls of derision. Upwards of 50,000 are joining a demonstration and parading the streets despite the bitter weather. Lack of transport prevents Shanghai's 30,000 gtudents gping to Nanking to join- the demonstrators. The lifting of the Nanking censorship reveal that coineident with Chiang Kai-shek's resignation, the students got out of hand and occupied and wrecked the Foreign Office. They also demonstrated to-day hefore the Kuomintqng head-quarters, where troops opened fire upon the students, who are believed to have journeyed from Peking. • No deaths are reported but at least 20 were wounded.
