SPORT AT NGONGOTAHA
combined club formed to purchase recreation ground ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING A well attended meeting, convened by Mr. M. J. Reidy, to discuss a proposal to secure a publicly owned and controlled recreation ground permanently for Ngongotaha, was held in the Ngongotaha Hall on Monday evening, and proved to be enthusiastically in support of the project. The convenor explained that the meeting had been considered necessary owing to an unsatisfactory position as regards the control of the present recreation ground. There had been conflict between some of the sports clubs in the district and the trustees of the reserve over the question of Sunday play and the sub-leas-ing of the area, as a result of which local sport had received a severe setback. Mr. J. D. Davys, solicitor, of Rotorua, outlined the disadvantages of creating a domain board as was proposed, stating that after a sum of £200 had been expended in purchasing the reserve, the area would then become Crown property as this proposal dfd not appeal to those present Mr. Davys then submitted an alternative which, he considered, would overcome the difficulties and disadvantages attached to a domain board. The proposal was to form an incorporated society to be called the Associated Sports Clubs of Ngongotaha, Incorporated, which could purchase and manage the land on behalf of the public of Ngongotaha, providing the Rotorua County Council was willing to sell. The chairman then read to the meeting a letter from the ' County Council which undertook to consider favourably the sale of the land for the sum of £200 on condition that the present lessees, the trustees of the Ngongotaha Recreation Reserve, Messrs. H. M. Martin and W. Stehabridge, were agreeable to terminate their lease and to waive their option to purchase in the event of a domain board heing constituted. After some discussion a motion, moved by Mr. Reidy and seconded by Mr. Cronin, that a club to be called the Associated Sports Clubs of Ngongotaha, with foundation members consisting of all present who signed their agreement to the rules of the proposed club, be formed. This was carried unanimously. Resolutions were then passed establishing a provisional committee of 12 members and incorporating the club, after which a set of proposed rules was adopted as read by the chairman and signed by a large majority of those present. An enthusiastic meeting then closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the club.
