MAIN TRUNK

SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS IN TIMETABLE OF EXPRESS A suggested alteration in the time-table of the south-bound Main Trunk express was submitted by the Railway Department to the eouncxl of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and met with unanimous approval. * The tentative proposal was that the train should leave Auckland on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m., arriving at Wellington 7.42 a.m. the next day. The only alteration in stopping places was the addition of Levin. It was explained that one advantage of the proposal would be the wider margin between the running of the Limited and the ordinary express trains from Auckland. The ordinary express train now leaves Auckland 40 minutes after the Limited so that the best use of the two trains as separate means of transport is not obtained. The new time-table would mean an improved service from Auckland to Frankton Junction and stations in the King Country. It would also mean a better service to and from National Park, passengers arriving from the north and departing for the south a little after 11 p.m., instead of 3.46 a.m. as at present. People from the Palmerston North area who wish to do business as soon as officers open could reach Wellington at 7.42 a.m. The change would result in better mail connections to Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Taranaki areas. The proposed arrival at Marton at 3.39 a.m., and at Palmerston North at 4.43 a.m., would enable mails to make train connections that would land the mails at New Plymouth at 1 p.m. instead of T.48 p.m., and at Napier at 12.56 p.m., instead of 4.57 j p.m., as at present. The Postal Department, it was stated, was not unfavourable to the change. The council of the chamber decided to approve of the time-table, Mr. A. Jacobs remarking that it was a decided improvement on the present one. The general manager of railways has the new time-table under review. Though it is generally favoured, some objections have been recorded against it.
