PROPOSALS TO PLACE ON PAYING BASIS HUGE BETTING TURNOVER

— By Telegraph — Copj right.)

Rec. Dec. 10, 7.10 p.m. LONDON, Wednes. Lord Dabernon, presiding at the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association, presented proposals for putting the totalisator on a paying basis. He revealed that the totalisator turnover in 1931 was £4,000,000 compared with £3,000,000 in 1930, though the total bets paid in 1928-29 | were at least £46,000,000 on the I course and £42,000,000 off the course. The money passing through the totalisator theref ore was manif estly a quite inadequate proportion of the turnover. It was also calculated that 20,000,000 people attend the greyhound track where the betting amounts to £12,000,000 yearly. Unfortunately, however, coursing was omitted from thc Totalisator Act.
